The Show That Was Too Successful — Admiral - Sid Caesar

In the annals of television history, there is perhaps no more remarkable cancellation story than that of the Admiral Broadway Revue. It remains, as comedian Sid Caesar himself noted, probably the only show in history to be taken off the air because it was too successful.

The Admiral Broadway Revue debuted on 28 January 1949 as a live, hour-long variety show broadcast simultaneously on both NBC and DuMont networks on Friday evenings. Directed by Max Liebman, hosted by Sid Caesar, and co-starring the brilliant Imogene Coca, it featured music, comedy, and elaborate production numbers broadcast from the International Theatre at 5 Columbus Circle in New York City.

Admiral’s sponsorship was itself audacious - the programme aired on NBC, owned by competitor RCA. But Siragusa had always been a bold operator, and the gamble paid off spectacularly.

The problem, as Siragusa later explained to Caesar over lunch in Chicago, was that the programme’s popularity created demand Admiral simply could not fulfil. When the show began, Admiral had been producing perhaps 50 to 100 sets per week. Within months, orders exploded to thousands per day. The company faced a choice: continue sponsoring the programme, or redirect that money into building a new factory.

Admiral chose the factory. The show aired its final episode on 3 June 1949, after just 19 weeks. But its creative legacy was enormous. Caesar, Coca, and Liebman went on to create Your Show of Shows, which debuted in February 1950 and became one of the most acclaimed programmes in television history, with writers including a young Mel Brooks and Neil Simon.

The Admiral Broadway Revue encapsulates everything that made Admiral remarkable: bold decision-making, an instinct for where culture and commerce intersect, and a relentless focus on meeting consumer demand.
